The Four Doctors- a holistic approach to fitness!

A Holistic Approach

As a person who is interested in your own health, you probably have noticed that our current medical mindset is fixated on treatment of the symptoms, rather than addressing the underlying cause of the issue. Many of today’s health problems cannot be resolved just by prescribing a drug, altering diet or creating a new exercise program. A holistic and integrated approach is needed and fortunately this model is gaining momentum.

If we truly want to be able to help ourselves attain a life of wellbeing, we can look at how Greek physicians such as Hippocrates (460 – 337 BC) and Galen (129 – 200 AD) based their medical opinions on the framework of the “three doctors”: Dr. Happiness, Dr. Quiet and Dr. Diet. They knew that if people were not happy, their chances of illness would go up. They also knew that if people did not have enough quiet, or self-time in their lives, their chance of illness would go up. Finally, they knew well that the type of food people ate was a major factor in health and vitality.
This is a great beginning to really understanding the root causes of our illnesses.
Nowadays however, there is another element that is needed; people in Western societies just don’t move enough and not moving can make you just as sick as a bad diet, being unhappy or not having enough quiet time. So Paul CHEK added a fourth component to the ancient philosophy - Dr. Movement. It is very common to find people whose problems are not grounded in some variation of a lack of diet, self-time, happiness or movement. Thus we have the four wisdoms: Dr. Quiet, Dr. Diet, Dr. Happiness and Dr. Movement.
This is something I teach and practice to all my clients.
